Image Analyses Psycho (1960)

This scene from Psycho (1960) is mainly close ups of Norman Bates peeking through the hole in the wall, that he has hidden behind a photo in his office. This shows the Kuleshov Effect well as the editing of the close ups of Norman Bates compared to the long shot of Marion getting changed makes him appear that he is enjoying watching her. Laura Mulvey’s theory ‘The Male Gaze’ shows that voyeurism is an important part in films. It almost makes us become voyeuristic as we are watching the scene as the killer which makes us feel quite uncomfortable. Alfred Hitchcock was somewhat of a voyeur in real life too, he invited loads of stars in Hollywood to a party but the room was too small for the amount of people, therefore were basically standing on top of each other, and Hitchcock was watching behind a screen laughing. Another time he invited them into a larger room with a long table that had a cover over it. When they removed the cover Hitchcock had dyed the food blue and yet again he was behind a screen watching them struggling to eat it.
