Solo Trailer Review: Cloverfield

Cloverfield (2008)

Genre: Horror/Thriller
Year released: 2008

What happened in the trailer?
It's shot from a handheld camera and starts off with a group of friends at a party, who later go outside to see 'something' has attacked the city and everyone is running around trying to escape from the mysterious thing that has attacked them. Robert Hawkins then starts a video diary explaining what is happening to which he says if you find this you must have survived and will know more about what has happened than he does at the time. It then goes onto a quick montage of shots from the film, giving away different parts of the narrative.

What were the good parts of the trailer?
I really liked the montage of different shots near the end, by speeding it up and only giving the audience a slight preview of what to expect, makes them want to actually see the whole film. The Bad TV effect throughout the trailer builds tension, as it keeps cutting out it makes it more realistic and it's a good way to jump to different shots.

What were the bad parts of the trailer?
Although it is very well edited and the collision cutting is very good, in some parts it is hard to understand exactly what is happening as the canted angles are so exaggerated that it makes you lose the storyline slightly.
